What shakespeare’s thoughts about greatness. What he means in quote,
Ask: What shakespeare’s thoughts about greatness. What he means in quote, “Be not afraid of greatness; some are born great, some achieve greatness, and others have…greatness thrust upon them.”
“Be not afraid of greatness.”
I think it means that if and when we have the opportunity for greatness, we should take it. The thing about greatness is that while a lot of people dream of achieving it, a lot of people will also shy away from the opportunity when they have it. It’s usually because they feel the timing is not right (still preparing themselves) or they cannot handle the pressure or expectations. What Shakespeare’s quote says then, is that we shouldn’t be afraid to grab that opportunity.
“Some are born great.”
For example, people from royalty. They are born to be the next king / queen. While they have a choice to /not/ be the next monarch, it is their birthright, and Shakespeare says they should go for it. Other examples would maybe be born geniuses / talented people. They should hone their talents and aim high. That sort of thing.
“Some achieve greatness.”
Some people achieve greatness through their hard work, like most businessman who started from nothing. Others achieve greatness from their political stands or extreme kindness. For example, Martin Luther King, Gandhi, Mother Teresa. They weren’t really born great, but they achieved greatness by doing genuinely good work in a big way. It’s never easy to cause a revolution, but they did.
“Others have greatness thrust upon them.”
This is the one where I think people are rarely ready. For example, Cory suddenly becoming president when Ninoy died. She didn’t ask for it, but she was given this enormous task, and she rose up to the challenge. I think the most amazing example for this is Mary, as in, Mary, mother of God. She was just a normal girl, but then she was suddenly asked by an angel to be the mother of God. If she were afraid of greatness, she would have said no. Most people would say no to something like that. But she agreed, and the rest is history.
So there, basically, there are many ways to greatness and we aren’t always ready. But, just like Optimus Prime says, “Fate rarely calls upon us at a moment of our choosing.” And what Shakespeare’s quote says is that we should go for it.
Hope this helps!
